A software package for the analysis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) data is presented. This package is based on the IFEFFIT library of numerical and XAS algorithms and is written in the Perl programming language using the Perl/Tk graphics toolkit. The programs described here are: (i) ATHENA, a program for XAS data processing, (ii) ARTEMIS, a program for EXAFS data analysis using Ultimate focusing of an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) enables the generation of ultrahigh-intensity X-ray pulses.

Synchrotron radiation covers a very broad and continuous spectral range from the infrared up to the hard X‐ray region. Its significant properties include high intensity, naturally narrow angular collimation, high degree of polarization, pulsed time structure, and high beam stability, and all of these properties can be quantitatively evaluated ( Balerina and Mobilio, 2015 ).

18/05/2020 Synchrotron radiation is highly plane polarised, as illustrated in figure 2. The small-angle part of the spectrum is therefore a potential source of highly polarised photons for use in birefringence experiments: if these photons interact with an intense optical pulse, helicity flip will mix the plane and perpendicularly polarised parts of the emitted radiation, ‘deforming’ the synchrotron The entire Journal of Synchrotron Radiation (JSR) editorial team would like to take this opportunity to thank Professor Dr Ilme Schlichting (Max Planck Institute, Heidelberg, Germany) for her many years of service as a Main Editor of JSR, and wish her well as she steps down at this time.
